My interest in pediatric infectious disease started long before medical school, when learning about the many different microscopic pathogens that can both keep our bodies healthy and make us ill. Throughout my medical training on three continents, I was drawn to how these microbes can change in each environment and how our body's defenses respond. I developed a passion for helping children and their families prevent and fight different infections through vaccines, medications such as antibiotics, and healthy habits. I provide care to children both in the hospital and in an outpatient clinic, and do everything from educating patients and families about infection prevention strategies to treating difficult and complex infections. I particularly enjoy working alongside physicians from multiple specialties to understand each child's response to infection and provide the most effective treatment. I also work with different medical professionals to understand what we can do to minimize the risk of infection in our environment. My research interests include looking at the best way to use our medications and laboratory tests so that we can treat children without causing harm or creating resistant bacteria in our community. I am very involved in educating medical students and residents on how to prevent and treat infections in whatever specialties they pursue. I also collaborate with doctors in other countries, particularly low-income countries, to expand our knowledge of infection prevention strategies, especially in our youngest and most vulnerable children.

Yolima Salazar, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at CUMC and an Infectious Diseases physician at NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Group Westchester. Dr. Salazar completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Saint John's Episcopal Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Salazar is also a member of Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Medical Association. I am a "lifer" at Columbia. I was born in this very hospital, grew up running the halls with my father who was chief of the Division of Adult Infectious Diseases, attended medical school here, and then did a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases. You could say that infectious diseases are in my blood. Not many kids at age eight say, "I like bugs and drugs." That was my childhood. I treat children of all ages, from infancy to young adulthood. My specific areas of interest are post-operative wound infections and infections of the bone, as well as sexual health concerns such as sexually transmitted diseases (STD), vaccines, and HIV. I also enjoy helping families sort out mystery illnesses such as recurrent fevers and fatigue. Often these illnesses are not due to an infection, and sometimes it just takes time and listening to figure them out. My research interests are focused on infection control and prevention for children at home, school, and when they live in long term care facilities such as a pediatric post-acute care facilities. I teach healthcare providers through our NYC STD prevention and training grant to provide excellent sexual health services to all young adult populations (those who have easy access to care and those who don't). Specific issues that we train on are how to increase access to STD screening, how to recognize, test, and treat STDs, how to offer HIV testing, and pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV. As the pediatric infectious disease fellowship director, I am also very involved in training and inspiring future pediatric infectious disease physicians. The work that we do in infectious diseases is collaborative, and we often work as a team with other services to provide the best, most efficient care to our patients.

I am a surgeon who specializes in the treatment of genitourinary cancers (prostate, kidney, bladder, testis, and adrenals). My primary interest is the study of innovative minimally invasive surgical techniques -- such as laparoscopy, robotic-assisted laparoscopy, and image-guided therapies -- to treat prostate, kidney, bladder, testicular, and adrenal cancers. I am an expert in the use of advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques to treat urologic cancers. The types of surgery I perform include: Nerve Sparing Laparoscopic or Robotic Radical Prostatectomy (removal of the prostate) for prostate cancer Laparoscopic Radical Cystectomy (removal of the bladder) and Urinary Diversion for invasive bladder cancer Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy (removal of the tumor only and preserving the rest of the kidney) for kidney cancers. I am fortunate to have world-class colleagues from medical oncology, radiology, and radiation oncology with whom I work closely in a multidisciplinary fashion to offer the best treatment for our patients. My clinical research focuses on the comparison of minimally invasive surgery to conventional open surgery with regards to cancer control and impact on the quality of life of our patients. An additional focus of my research is the development of continuous quality improvement and assessing its impact on surgical outcome. After a completing a fellowship in urologic oncology and advanced laparoscopic oncology at MSKCC, I joined the attending staff of MSKCC's Urology Service in 2004. I am board certified by the American Board of Urology, a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology, the American Urological Association, the European Association of Urology, and other national and international societies; additionally I serve as a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed urology and cancer journals.
