Care Philosophy: "The Diagnosis of cancer can be overwhelming. At Cornell, we utilize a multidiciplinary team approach in the treatment of patients with lung and esophageal cancers. Our dedicated team is involved from the initial evaluation through the completion of a patient's post-operative course. This unparalleled attention to the patient helps to ease the burden of the diagnosis. For those of us involved in research as well as care, this is a very important time -- several novel treatment approaches recently have been developed here at Cornell, and we currently are showing promising results."

Care Philosophy: "Because of my good fortune in training with some of the pioneers in general and cardiac surgery, I had opportunities to join the faculty of many well established cardiovascular surgery programs throughout the country. I chose to return to Weill Cornell because I could not find a program anywhere in the United States that could provide the same high level of care to patients that the nurses, anesthesiologists and technicians do here at Weill Cornell. I take great pride in being a member of a team that can handle the most complex patient situation, regardless of the time, whether day or night, the circumstances or the nature of the problem."

If the valve must be replaced, he utilizes the latest generation biologic or mechanical composite materials. For aortic arch aneurysms, well-established and time-tested techniques are used for effective cerebral protection to minimize the risk of cerebral injury. In the thoracic, thoracoabdominal,or abdominal aorta, he offers endovascular or open repair techniques, depending on the optimal approach for each individual patient's anatomic needs. Dr. Lau has extensive experience in many other areas of cardiac surgery and cardiovascular surgery. Care Philosophy: My philosophy on care is patient centered. The role of a cardiac surgeon is to provide options for advanced treatment of cardiac disease, being an excellent technical surgeon with exemplary outcomes. The decision of what treatment pathway is selected is totally in the hands of the patient and patient's family. My team strives to be easily accessible and responsive to patient question and concerns prior to surgery, during hospital stay and after discharge from the hospital. Cardiac surgery may be routine to the cardiac surgeon but is not routine to individual patient and facing the options of cardiac surgery can be daunting. I make every effort to ensure that the experience is exemplary from the patient's standpoint.

Throughout my academic career, I have been lucky enough to train with the giants of coronary artery bypass surgery. While bypass surgery may appear as one of the more basic cardiac operation, the complexities of the patient and the variations of the operation require exquisite attention to detail to keep patients safe, which is my main priority. Biography: Dr. Balaram previous role was as Associate Professor and Director of Clinical Quality and Performance for Cardiovascular Surgery for Mount Sinai Heart at Mount Sinai Morningside. She has over two decades of experience in the care of cardiac surgical patients in New York City. Dr. Balaram earned her BA/MD at the accelerated 6-year medical school at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, one of the only clinically integrated programs in the country. After graduating with honors, she pursued a General Surgery residency at Creighton University. While in training, she earned her PhD doing atherosclerosis bench research on the immunologic factors in atherosclerosis. She then completed her Cardiothoracic Residency in 2003 at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. At a time when techniques for robotic and minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery were just beginning, she arrived in New York in 2003 for this specialized training at St. Luke’s Roosevelt, ?During her subsequent years at this hospital, (now called Mount Sinai Morningside), she developed an interest in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a congenital disorder of the heart muscle. She assisted in the advancement of surgical techniques for HCM and consolidated the data collection and careful analysis of clinical research. This led to the creation of the leading HCM program in the region, and one of the few nationally-recognized specialized HCM centers of excellence in the world. Dr. Balaram has spent much of her career caring for a population of inner city and underserved patients who have had little previous exposure and access to medical care. The New York State cardiac surgery registry continually recognized the patients of her program as some of the highest risk in the state to undergo cardiac surgery. Her successful surgical care of these complex patients required expert knowledge and experience that is of benefit to all patients. Her program earned the prestigious 3-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgery over multiple years. Dr. Balaram also studied clinical outcomes of women after heart surgery. Women are known to be at higher risk for cardiac surgery and may not always enjoy the same long-term benefits as men. Dr. Balaram collaborated with medical experts in gender studies and is able to offer surgical approaches and postoperative therapies that can help women recover from surgery. In her free time, Dr. Balaram enjoys spending time with her family, reading, and playing the piano. Her current passion is the creation of Team Cardiac, a new cardiac surgical chapter of the 501c3 charity Operation International. This surgical mission group was co-founded by her husband , Ravi Kothuru, 25 years ago and has provided free surgical care to thousands of patients around the world. She is also publishing a book “Complications in Cardiac Surgery: Strategic Analysis and Clinical Review”, that will help young surgeons learn about how to improve cardiac surgical outcomes. Dr. Balaram understands that beyond the technical aspects, having heart surgery can be an anxious time for patients. Her goal is to deliver an individualized, patient-centered approach towards cardiovascular therapies. She strives to use her surgical expertise and experience to provide the best operation at the correct time and to do so with compassion and care. She is dedicated to helping each patient navigate this journey so they may once again enjoy their life and community.

Care Philosophy: To provide the absolute best surgical care to our patients in a supportive and healing environment. Early in my career, I met with a patient in his early twenties and his parents. It was the day before the young man's valve surgery and as we parted, his father said, "Doctor, today, he is my son, tomorrow, he is your son." This simple yet moving and clear definition of the trust families place in us has always guided my approach to the care of our patients. Cardiac surgery is the ultimate team effort and our teams at New York Presbyterian Hospital and New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital are outstanding. It is an honor to work with such dedicated professionals in providing exemplary and compassionate care to all of our cardiac surgical patients.

Weiskopf Professor of Surgical Oncology (in Surgery) at CUMC, Chief of General Thoracic Surgery and Director, The Price Family Center for Comprehensive Chest Care, Lung and Esophageal Center. He is instrumental in making the Thoracic Surgery section at Columbia University Medical Center one of the best in the U.S. and he is one of the youngest professors of surgery at a major academic institution in the United States. Dr. Sonett is best known for his work on the multidisciplinary treatment of lung and esophageal malignancies. Leading work in minimally invasive treatment of lung and esophageal cancer, Dr. Sonett and his team at Columbia are innovators in the development and teaching techniques of Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) and Minimally Invasive Esophageal (MIE) surgery, allowing surgeons to incorporate these techniques into their daily practices. Dr. Sonett and his team make up one of the few programs in the country to employ a combination of maximal chemo and radiation and surgical therapies in the treatment of locally advanced lung malignancies. He is also a leader in multi-modality therapies for lung and esophageal cancers, and a pioneer in endo-bronchial palliation of benign and malignant airway stenosis. In the clinical area of lung transplantation, Dr. Sonett is best known for developing an extended-donor lung transplant criteria protocol. Extended donor criteria (EDC) applies to the use of organs that don't meet the usual criteria for transplantation due to various health problems, but are still healthy enough for a successful transplant (Liver MD 2006). Dr. Sonett and his team have been aggressively trying to alleviate the donor shortage by evaluating lungs that may be rejected from other centers (CS News 2005). Between 2001 and 2003, 53 percent of the lungs transplanted at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia were extended donor criteria lungs, with no difference in survival between EDC lung recipients and regular lung recipients. The Columbia programs has a 95% survival rate after one year and 83% after three years, which far surpasses the national average of 79% and 62% respectively (CS Lung News 2006). Dr. Sonett has been an invited speaker and principal and co- investigator of numerous clinical trials, author of numerous publications in renown journals such as the Journal of The American College of Cardiology, Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplant, among many others. Dr. Sonett received his MD from Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University Medical School, and completed his surgical residency at the University of Massachusetts, and Thoracic Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Professional Memberships include the New York Thoracic Society, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons Dr. Sonett has received numerous award and honors including annual awards to America's Top Doctors, Castle Connolly America's Top Doctors for Cancer, New York Magazine's Best Doctors, the Barbara Neibauer Celebration of Life Award, Foundation for Thymic Cancer and the Humanitarian Award, Chesed of New Square.

Care Philosophy: I prefer to look at my interactions with my patients as a partnership. We work together to improve their health, cure their cancer, manage their reflux, or make their breathing better. I strongly believe that patients need to be an active participant in their care, and the first step of that is making sure they understand what the clinical situation is, what I propose as a treatment plan, and what their expectations can be going forward.
