Head Lice: Get It Out of Your Head

I had the world's worst lice. It took me forever to get rid of them. It was just terrible. It's not even a joke. It's like if you sweat after a workout and your head gets really itchy and magnify that by a million. Your head is constantly itchy. It feels like it's dry, and then you scratch and you feel bumps everywhere and just they get under your nails and you scratch and you can just feel them kind of. I could see them crawling on my hair shafts and everything. If you would brush your hair and your hair would fall out, I could see them in my brush. It was disgusting. My mom went to the store. She bought every single lice thing you can get, the little miniature combs that are super close together to comb them out, the spray for your house, the wash, the shampoo, the conditioner, and we did it all that day and the next day and cleaned everything in the house, and they still would not go away. I would think they were gone, and there would be two little baby eggs in my hair and then they'd just magnify back. The shampoo and conditioner are the worst-smelling things ever. You put it in your hair, and your hair gets all ... it doesn't get hard. It just feels really gross and gooey and it just goes everywhere. And then you can try and condition your hair, and you're not supposed to because it coats the the lice and the baby eggs and nits in oil so they don't die or whatever. But your hair just gets so dry after you put the shampoo in you just want to, and then you make the lice so much worse. I wanted to brush my hair all the time to get them out, but I didn't want to see them in the brush, and so I would pull my hair in a ponytail. And I was like, "I'm just going to cut my hair off. I'm just going to cut it all off and not deal with them anymore." I was like, "If it gets that bad, I'll cut them off." We ended up going to this place in Los Angeles to get it done because my mom and my grandparents were just so fed up with it. They were like, "You know what? We're just going to take you to this place." And I would sit in a chair for three hours, and they would literally take section by section like you're getting your hair colored and they would just pick at your hair and coat it in this, I guess, lice-killing gel or something like that, and then they'd go back and comb it through again and again. And then you go home, and you have to sit in the shower with your hair with the shampoo for 20 minutes. I just think I didn't get rid of it all the way, and so it just kept coming back and back. But the second time I realized I had lice, I was back at my house and I was scratching my head and I found it under my nails. I was like, "I have lice. I can't tell anybody." I don't think I told my mom for a while, and so I would go in the bathroom in the middle of the night and comb my hair out and do it myself. And it was just so bad. I had thought I could do it myself, and then I ended up having to tell them because it got so out of hand. We found this thing at the store. It's a professional-grade lice killer or something like that, and so my mom put that in my hair for twice the recommended time and just killed it all, I'm pretty sure. And then after that, I went to school two months later and I found it in my hair again. I was like, "Oh no." And so I dealt with it the entire day and came home. We had to do the entire thing over again because it's not just the lice you have to get. It's the eggs, and then once you get rid of it or start getting rid of it, just start washing everything and spraying everything you can. Everywhere that I could possibly get lice, on an airplane or on a big fabric seat, I will put a hood over it, a jacket over it, to cover it and make sure I don't get it. It's like coughing. If you don't cover your mouth or cover your head, you're going to get sick or something. Just don't give up on lice, if you have it, because you're just going to get worse and it's going to multiply. If you have lice and you're combing it out and you're like, "Oh, I think I got most of it," no. You have to get all of it out or else it's going to re-spawn on your head.
