A:

Lewy body dementia (LBD) is related to abnormal buildup of alpha-synuclein protein into masses called Lewy bodies, which interfere with how nerve cells function. What causes Lewy bodies is not known, but the risk increases with age and LBD is more common in men than women. LBD is not necessarily hereditary, but a family history of it increases risk.
