Dementia occurs when brain function is lost. It tends to start gradually and worsen over time. In some circumstances, it can be managed and slowed. Dementia can impair a person’s ability to fight infection or other acute illness, but it is not typically the cause of death. Rapid onset of symptoms could indicate a medical emergency.
