Gabapentin (Neurontin) treats seizures, nerve-related pain, and restless legs syndrome. The exact way it works is unclear. Scientists believe it changes the way nerve cells communicate. It may work by decreasing the release of brain chemicals—or neurotransmitters—that excite nerve cells.
