Healthgrades Data Sources

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance, Healthgrades analyzes patient outcome data for virtually every hospital in the country. Specifically, Healthgrades uses the following data sources for its various ratings and awards.

The following convention is used below: the Healthgrades rating/award year, the data source including data years, and the date the rating/award was released on the Healthgrades website.

Appendectomy

  • 2017: Individual states (AZ, CO, FL, IL, IA, MD, NV, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, WI) for years 2012 through 2014. Updated 10/18/2016.

  • 2016: Due to the transition of the Bariatric Surgery award and ratings release to align with Healthgrades 2017 awards and ratings, the Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award will not have a 2016 award year. Hospitals who have performed statistically better than expected in 2015 and 2017 may message continuous years of 5-star performance. Additionally, hospitals that were Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award recipients during those years may message continuous years of receiving the award, and display the 2016 date on badges, banners, and marketing material. This was done to maintain continuity across the gap year.

For more information on how Healthgrades rates hospitals, see our methodologies

Some hospitals have multiple locations that report under the same Medicare Provider ID. In cases where Healthgrades is able to identify hospitals reporting jointly, Healthgrades uses results for all locations in the analysis, and each of the facilities receives the same rating and is designated as an award recipient if an award is received.

Focus on the most important outcomes. In Fall 2013, Healthgrades removed the 180-day mortality rating. Healthgrades is placing more emphasis on patient outcomes that are most important to consumers (in-hospital mortality), and those that are consistent with national quality improvement efforts (mortality within 30 days of hospital admission).
