Dr. Usha Kumar earned her bachelor's degree in biology from the University of California, Berkeley, completing an honor's thesis involving endometrial cancer research, and received her medical degree at Drexel University College of Medicine. During her time in medical school, she was selected to be an Albert Schweitzer Fellow and focused her project on developing a wound education program for needle exchange programs. She has been involved in a number of research projects, including microarray analysis of retinal pathways affected by photo-oxidative stress at Scheie Eye Institute. She has won several awards for research poster presentations, and served as the President of the Ophthalmology interest group on campus. Currently, Dr. Kumar is an Ophthalmology resident physician at University of California, San Diego. She is enthusiastic and compassionate in her care toward patients. She is currently conducting research under Dr. Natalie Afshari on assessing the optimal timing of pre-operative antibiotics for cataract surgery. She occasionally volunteers with the non-profit Flying Samaritan group providing care for underprivileged individuals in Tecate, Mexico. She plans to continue with international volunteer work in the field of Ophthalmology. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, fine dining, yoga, running, playing piano, and spending time with family and friends.
