Dr. Gershefski's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Gershefski " Dr. Patricia Gershefski was born in New York State and raised from her early years in the Washington, D.C./Metropolitan area. She is a third generation mental health professional; her paternal grandmother was one of the earliest known female psychiatrists, Dr. Janet Heller of The Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, along with both of her parents, Drs. Bonnie and Robert Anthony of Georgetown University Medical School and The Baltimore-Washington Psychoanalytic Institute in the Washington, DC/Metropolitan area. Following her college years at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, Dr. Gershefski worked for several years in the reputable Biological Psychiatry Branch of The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), researching Bipolar Disorder with Dr. Robert Post. She then elected to stay in the DC area to obtain her Doctoral of Philosophy Degree (PhD) in Clinical Psychology at The Catholic University of America, and did two years of full-time advanced training (including her internship) at the internationally renowned (former) Chestnut-Lodge Psychiatric Hospital (CLH) in Rockville, MD. Amazingly, twenty years later, Dr. Gershefski continues to do psychotherapy with several of her severely-disturbed patients from her time training at CLH. Dr. Patricia Gershefski married fellow Catholic University Clinical Psychology doctoral (PhD) student, John Gershefski, in 1999, and she had two children while still in graduate school. She extended her time in training by taking a leave-of-absence to raise her two children, using guidance from and learning about child development for several years through the organization, PACE (Parent and Community Education). Obviously, her extensive understanding of child and adolescent development is both personal and professional! To learn in greater depth about Dr. Patricia Gershefski's clinical training, research and teaching positions, and community volunteer experiences please refer to her LinkedIn website profile. You might also be interested in her (demonstrated) talent, skills, and excellent rapport with clients through actual ratings and client testimonials right here on the Healthgrades website. While she remains young, she is considered very experienced. Dr. Gershefski practices privately out of her office in Friendship Heights directly next to the Maryland-District of Columbia (DC) boundary line on the DC side. Since 2013, she also joined, by invitation, The George Washington School of Professional Psychology as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology, working directly to train the next generation's group of professional psychologists (PSYD degree). Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Gershefski "Clients come to me when they are dissatisfied with their lives and/or overwhelmed by a situation or stressor. I view therapy as a collaborative endeavor and work together with you to develop a treatment which incorporates your strengths, needs, and life's experiences. I also respect your wish to work on a specific area of concern short-term and/or to address a variety of complex issues over time. During the treatment, my clients report that they feel safe, supported, and challenged by me, and that their lives are highly enriched by the experience.

I have trained for 25 years in diverse settings (inpatient psychiatric, child and adolescent residential, community outpatient, and university counseling). I have worked with persons ages 4-80 with problems ranging from psychosis to mild relational struggles. As I have had exposure to a wide profile of clients, I have used various treatment approaches to intervene successfully with a range of psychopathologies and difficult life situations. "
