Nickolaus, MSN, CRNP, AACC is a board certified Adult Critical Care Nurse Practitioner for over 20 years and has worked in a variety of areas of cardiology. Previously she worked with the Program for Adult Congenital Heart Disease services at Penn State Hershey and managed complex congenital heart disease patients who have continued need for medical and surgical management. This meant managing arrhythmias, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, endocarditis, as well as aiding patients require additional surgical and medical interventions for their heart disease from ICDs to open heart surgery. She works in both the inpatient setting doing consult rounds as well as managing outpatients in the cardiology setting. Michelle is well published and a seasoned national, regional, and local lecturer on a variety of cardiovascular topics. Actively involved in the American College of Cardiology, she holds the designation of Associate of the American College of Cardiology (AACC) in recognition of her board certification and contributions to cardiovascular nursing and medicine. She is actively involved in national cardiovascular professional organizations in adult congenital heart disease and acquired heart disease areas. Previously working as a nurse for her now 27-year career, she's worked with acquired heart disease patients in general medical/surgical nursing, general cardiology, interventional cardiology and cardiovascular prevention and holds CCRN certification. Her extensive background as a bedside staff nurse and nurse practitioner in critical care and many subspecialties in cardiology has given her valuable clinical insights to share. She holds an appointment as a Clinical Associate for the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. She was previously an Instructor of Medicine at Penn State Hershey College of Medicine. She is a guest lecturer for the UPenn's Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program. Michelle graduated from Penn State University with her BSN in 1990 and obtained her MSN from the University of Pennsylvania's Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program in 1997. She's been recognized with the 2011 Penn State Hershey Advanced Practice Clinician Excellence Award for her work with Hershey's Advanced Practice Clinician Council; a group begun by Michelle and her colleagues for advanced practice nurses and physician assistants at Penn State Hershey. She was also the recipient of the 2008 Penn State Kienle Nurse Humanitarian Award.
