This content was provided by Jeffrey Atkinson "Jeff has always had a passion to help others. He started in college in pursuit of an engineering degree like his grandfather. However, Jeff soon found that psychology was his calling. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from Old Dominion University (1989 and 1991 respectively). Jeff began his career in mental health as an in-home therapist in Virginia. He obtained training in solution-focused therapy and in-home family preservation. He and his wife made the move to the Atlanta area in 1992. Jeff worked at Georgia Mentor as a Family Coordinator and then joined the clinicial team at Devereux Georgia as a therapist with their residential program. Jeff became a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in 1997. He has been in private practice ever since. In 2000 he was a recipient of a slot in a grant training program through the State of Georgia Office of Adoptions. This program was for licensed therapists to work in teams to treat attachment-resistant (i.e., Reactive attachment Disorder RAD), adoptive children. The training was 350 hours provided by experts in the trauma and attachment fields from around the world. Through this program he completed intensive training in Neurofeedback and brain mapping (qEEG assessment). He also obtained level I and II training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). He has been certified in EMDR since 2015 through EMDRIA. Jeff is now a Board Certified Neurofeedback practitioner through the Biofeedback Certification International Association (BCIA). Jeff is trained in administering trauma, attachment and bonding assessments. Trauma assessments are to assess the client for past trauma and how that may be impacting that child's current behavior. Attachment assessments are used to assess the child for attachment issues (i.e., Reactive Attachment Disorder). Bonding assessments are used most often in court cases involving custody and potential termination of parental rights (TPR). They assess a relationship the child may have with a potential adoptive or biological parent.Jeff went on to obtain training in sex offense specific counseling and assessment. He obtained a certification in Juvenile Sex Offender Counseling from University of Louisville in 2007. Jeff has been working with local juvenile courts to provide sex offense specific assessment and counseling for adults and juveniles since that time. Jeff also particpated in a cutting edge grant program to treat refugees who were suffering from posttraumtic stress symptoms. He went on to present these findings with the Grant Chair Kathleen Connors, Ph.D. at the World Mental Health Foundation in 2006. Jeff has a passion to give back to the active military and vets who have risked their lives to keep this country and his family safe. He has worked with many combat vets and military contractors who suffer from the effects of war. He is on several veteran websites and provides pro bono consultation and service when vets are uninsured. Jeff accepts Tricare as well.Jeff founded the Attachment and Bonding Center of Atlanta, LLC (ABC) in 2002 and the Alliance for Change through Treatment, LLC. (ACT) in 2004 with Cassandra Johnson-Landry, LPC. From 2002 to 2014 he was Co-Director, Supervisor and Therapist for these agencies. In September 2014, Jeff sold his shares in these companies to pursue more time providing treatment and more quality time with his family. Jeff has seen some remarkable cases of recovery using the modalities of EMDR and/or neurofeedback with indviduals who have been traumatized or are at developmental plateaus in there life. A positive treatment outcome does not seem to be affected by age, gender or mental health diagnoses. Neurofeedback is being used by clinicians to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, Bi-Polar Disorder, Autism, etc. Jeff looks forward to assisting you with your needs and promises to provide quality services in a confidential and effective manner."
