James Smuda, MS, is a certified athletic trainer (ATC) who specializes in sports medicine, biomechanical evaluation and rehabilitation. He has additional certifications as a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS), corrective exercise specialist (CES) and performance enhancement specialist (PES). He is also certified in Functional Movement Screen (FMS), Selective Functional Movement Analysis (SFMA), Graston technique M1 and as an active release provider (ART™). Mr. Smuda is passionate about his work and enjoys helping people return to a pain free state at a rapid pace. His expertise includes treating injuries related to football, baseball, soccer, swimming and basketball. Mr. Smuda takes a functional approach to corrective exercise programming, focusing on the person as a whole. His approach to total body biomechanics helps to identify and address dysfunctional movement systems. Prior to joining UC San Diego Health in 2015, Mr. Smuda worked with a variety of organizations and institutions. He has been an athletic trainer with US Soccer, Special Operations Command Central, University of Virginia, UCLA, University of Wyoming and the Hamburg Sea Devils. He has also spent time in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals and in minor league baseball with the Albuquerque Isotopes and the Los Angeles Dodgers as an intern. Mr. Smuda obtained a master’s degree in kinesiology from San Diego State University.
