Dr. Street's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Street "Dr. Street co-founded Anxiety Solutions of Northern New England, PLLC, in 2004 with his wife, Dr. Lee Fitzgibbons. Both are clinical psychologists who specialize in evidence-guided therapies for people struggling with dysfunctional anxiety (e.g., worrying) and fear (e.g., phobias). They met when working at the Center for Treatment and Study of Anxiety in Philadelphia where they participated in clinical research developing exposure-based, cognitive-behavioral therapies (EB/CBTs) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and generalized social phobia (GSP), a.k.a., social anxiety disorder. Dr. Street specialized in child and family psychology/therapy while earning his PhD at the California School of Professional Psychology in San Diego. He often combines his expertise in child/family therapy with his expertise in EB/CBTs in treating individuals struggling with anxiety disorders and their families. Dr. Fitzgibbons co-authored Helping Your Child with OCD: A Workbook for Parents of Children with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder with provides guidance for parents on how to support their child's OCD therapy. Drs. Fitzgibbons and Street often collaborate and provide coordinated treatment when a patient and his/her family are all struggling to deal with an anxiety disorder. In addition to more traditional once- or twice- a week therapy sessions, Drs. Fitzgibbons and Street also offer an intensive outpatient therapy program for OCD and sometimes for certain other anxiety disorders in which the patient (and perhaps other family members) come for therapy several hours a day for 4 to 6 days a week, typically for 3 to 4 weeks. The program has attracted patients from as far away as Alaska and Singapore. Through an agreement with Anthem BC BS of Maine, its members can now apply for our program to be covered by their outpatient mental health benefits when warranted. Of interest to military personnel and their families, Drs. Street and Fitzgibbons have complemented their expertise in EB/CBTs with a week-long training from the Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP). Topics ranged from understanding the deployment cycle and its impact on military personnel and their families to application of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for PTSD to military personnel. Both are registered with TriCare Standard. Drs. Street and Fitzgibbons also host a free support group specifically for adults struggling with dysfunctional anxiety and fear. The adult anxiety support group has been meeting in Anxiety Solutions' main office in Raymond, Maine, for more than 10 years. It meets at 7PM on most 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month (except only the 2nd Thursday in November and December). All adults with anxiety disorders are welcome to attend. New members are asked to come 10 to 15 minutes early to read and sign agreement to the ground rules for group membership. For additional information, contact Dr. Street either by phone or by e-mail (gpstreet at anxietysolutions dot net). "

Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Street "At Anxiety Solutions, we emphasize - Specializing in Combining Compassionate Care with Evidence-Guided Therapies for Anxiety Disorders.

We strongly believe that providing a caring and trustworthy relationship is essential but not enough, that we must also offer the kinds of therapies that clinical research has shown most likely to work.

That's why we specialize in exposure-based, cognitive behavioral therapies (EB/CBTs).  We believe that when it comes to treating anxiety disorders, rigorous clinical research most strongly supports the effectiveness not just of cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBTs) in general but of these particular types of CBTs, CBTs that utilize an exposure therapy component.

We then supplement EB/CBTs with therapies for depression, insomnia, anger difficulties, family relationship issues, etc., as needed.

We also believe talk therapy is not enough, that what works with anxiety disorders are more active therapies that involve actually changing one's behaviors, whether physical and/or mental.  We promote doing things differently in order to develop new and more effective habits to replace old habit patterns that have become dysfunctional and are now contributing to distress instead of relieving it.

The process can be challenging, but throughout we provide guidance, encouragement, motivation, and support.  We want you to experience and learn that it's not magic and that you are capable of doing what it takes to make your life better."
