This content was provided by Cynthia Penwell "As your teacher, ally, and your coach, I view therapy as a way to release, energize, and give direction as motivation for change. Together we can find opportunities for developing new coping strategies (tactics for dealing with life!).My approach emphasizes the important connections between physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, collaborative development of individual treatment goals – as well as the value of a good sense of humor. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), with a Master's degree in Social Work from University of Texas, and an undergraduate degree in Psychology from University of South Florida. I am also a Certified Autism Specialist, with over 25 yrs experience working with kids and adults on the spectrum. I wasn't born in Austin, but I've lived here for over 20 years and I understand the community, schools, and systems quite well. As the parent of three adopted children, I bring a lifetime of advocacy and passion for the issues facing families who are impacted by emotional and behavioral concerns. I am also an adjunct professor at the School of Social Work at University of Texas, and I love the opportunity this allows to influence and create change in the young adults at the university. I also teach protective parenting and anger management groups at a domestic violence center, facilitate groups for adults and adolescents throughout the Austin area, and provides continuing education and presentations to other professionals and the community about trauma, attachment, child development, and tolerance. I love what I do, have a great passion for social and emotional struggles, and also volunteer for organizations such as the Children's Community Resource Coordination Group, Feed My People, and sit on the Board of Directors for PLAN of Central Texas. Personally…I also enjoy running with my dog, relaxing fun with family and friends, outdoor activities, and the allure of a good book. I believe in the power of humor, the beauty of fun, and the joy of relationships. It is my goal to be your teacher, ally, and coach in your journey to a more fulfilling and less stressful life experience. I'm here to work on your behalf; to provide acceptance, respect, and understanding. With you, I want to help you build your own capacities and strengths in moving towards change. All people have potential for growth and adaptation throughout life. With encouragement, kindness, guidance and humor – I can help you and your family move Life Forward."

In counseling or coaching individuals often report feeling stuck in old behaviors or overwhelmed by old emotions. The beauty of new research on the brain reveals that repeating old negative stories initiates emotions that get reinforced in the brain. We now know that through recognizing false negative beliefs and refocusing thoughts, the brain can be retrained. So the good news is that when clients recognize they are stuck in their negative thoughts, they begin the journey to heart and spirit. This is their road to freedom and positive change.
I primarily offer Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for adults, while integrating elements of psycho-dynamic theory, attachment theory, and various other orientations. Because everyone's needs differ, we will work together to find an appropriate therapeutic intervention based on a your presenting symptoms, current difficulties, and ongoing feedback."
