In addition, I provide clinical supervision for counselors who are pursuing licensure and teach Graduate Level counseling courses at New Jersey City University and Kean University. Some people seek for counseling for short term help and to develop tools & strategies to get them through a particularly painful time, others seek a more intensive longer term approach, which involves a more in depth exploration of problematic life patterns. Regardless of what brings you in, you can expect a comfortable and supportive atmosphere that facilitates problem solving, growth and insight. WHAT MAKES UP THE PROBLEM People often enter therapy because they are struggling with difficult emotional circumstances and relationships. Most are trying to make sense of problematic thoughts and feelings and straining to figure out how they fit into the world around them and with the people in their lives. They are looking for new perspectives on managing their conflicts and generating a deeper sense of friendship and intimacy in their lives. Some people I encauntered in counseling have learned to live their lives feeling anxious, self-critical or feeling down as long as they can remember themselves. When you do not notice that you suffer from anxiety, it progresses into fear and phobias, which are more intense versions of anxiety. You start making choices based on your feelings and emotions; you become paralyzed and avoid certain situations and experiences. When you are too sensitive to everything and overreact to what is happening around you, your physiological and emotional responses start to take control over your thoughts. Anxiety can alert you to attain certain aspects of your life that you are not dealing with. If you are disconnected and do not pay attention to what is going on in your life, they accumulate and become unmanageable. Good news is that majority of your unhealthy anxiety starts to disappear when you understand the root cause of your anxiety, change your thinking, deal with stress differently and learn to take control of your emotional responses. While we can't change the past, we can work together to better understand your personal history and to resolve some of the challenges that remain. By using an approach that is specific to you and your needs, we can address long-standing emotional obstacles, behavioral patterns and perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Therapy is a collaborative relationship based on trust and accountability. Good fit between the individual and the skills and personality of the therapist is important. A skilled counselor with good insight and life experiences of overcoming challenges can help you master your life challenges and help you to not allow those challenges to take control over your life. The counselor serves like a magnifying glass on your true self, pulling the light out of you and paves the way for you to achieve fulfillment. Your counselor will never tell you to do anything of which you're not capable. The role of your counselor is to stretch you to your limit, but not beyond it."
