Dr. Yuko Hanakawa, PHD
NY State Licensed Clinical Psychologist; Certified AEDP Therapist & Supervisor; neurofeedback trainer After completing her M.A. at New York University, Dr. Hanakawa graduated from Adelphi University with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. She is a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Her therapy style is characterized by a transformation-based, healing oriented psychotherapy model called AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), combining holistic approaches such as hypnotherapy and mindfulness practice. Deeply inspired by an encounter while at Adelphi with Dr. Diana Fosha, the developer of AEDP, Dr. Hanakawa started her training in AEDP. She is particularly fascinated by deep emotional engagement, the wisdom of the body, and transformational phenomenology of mind and heart that AEDP brings about in clients. Her paper, "Receiving Loving Gratitude: How a Therapist's Mindful Embrace of a Patient's Gratitude Facilitates Transformance," was published in the AEDP Journal in 2011. She is a Faculty member at AEDP Institute. Dr. Hanakawa is a former faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Mt. Sinai St. Luke's Hospital and directed the externship program for the doctoral psychology students. She is currently in private practice near Columbus Circle in Manhattan. She is interested in Positive Psychology, Mindfulness, Self-Compassion, and the applications of AEDP to diverse populations, such as patients from various cultural backgrounds. Impressed with the accelerated effectiveness of neurofeedback, she offers neurofeedback sessions to clients in addition to psychotherapy or as stand-alone intervention.

I'm one of the 11 Certified AEDP Supervisors at the AEDP Institute. I teach and supervise therapists to learn the AEDP model, which is a healing oriented psychotherapy model that focuses on feelings and relationships. (www.aedpinstitute.com)

AEDP works to undo aloneness and co-create a sense of safety in the relationship between client and therapist. When safety is established, an individual can courageously summon strength to face and process painful emotions that he/she cannot face alone. When processed to satisfaction, emotions are the great change agent for transformation. AEDP is known to be good for treating trauma, depression, anxiety, among many other conditions.

Neurofeedback is a method to re-calibrate the brain waves so that it learns to optimize its function. It is a safe, non-invasive intervention that accelerates the healing process. Neurofeedback is known to be good for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, mood, interpersonal issues, ADHD, brain injury etc.
