Patrick Madden's Care Philosophy

Q: Is counseling/psychotherapy effective? A: Yes, hundreds of studies conducted over the last several decades show that psychotherapy is generally effective. However, positive outcomes in counseling and psychotherapy depend on the "goodness of fit" between the client(s) and the helping professional. One aspect of this includes the fit between the client's unique challenges and the experience, background, and training of the service provider. Another aspect of "fit" may be referred to as interpersonal "chemistry". That is, the client has to feel comfortable and confident with the helping professional. When a solid "therapeutic bond" or "therapeutic alliance" is formed good things happen! At the onset I spend a great deal of time helping potential clients who have been referred to me determine whether or not there is a good "fit" between us. In addition, we collaborate on establishing mutually agreed upon outcomes (or goals), and I continually solicit feedback from my clients to be sure that they are experience positive progress (Client-Directed, Outcome-Informed Therapy).

With a Masters degree in Educational Psychology - emphasis on counseling psychology - I have 34 years experience counseling children, adolescents and young adults, coaching parents, and assisting individuals with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disabilities, and other developmental and social/emotional challenges. I also assist with Vocational and Career Planning and "Life Coaching".

I was named Outstanding School Psychologist of the Year by the California Association of School Psychologists (CASP), and am a past president of the Ventura County Association of School Psychologists.

In addition to teaching graduate-level classes at two local universities, I have presented professional seminars and workshops at the state and national level and have published numerous articles.

There are two basic forms of providing counseling and therapeutic support to individuals and families. The first may be thought of as "non-directive". In this approach the helping professional is relatively inactive and simply provides the time and space (i.e., safe oasis) for a client to work through his/her challenges primarily on their own with a warm, sympathetic and supportive "consultant". The other approach is more "directive". In this approach the helping professional is more active in coaching and teaching and assisting the client in developing insights as well as developing more adaptive coping mechanisms. I use both approaches depending on the individual(s) I am working with.

I do not limit myself to any particular philosophy, school of thought, or therapeutic techniques. I employ "depth" psychology, Cognitive Behavior Modification, Humanistic or Person-centered approaches, spiritual psychology, and Behavioral approaches (i.e., applied behavior analysis).
