Care Philosophy

My clinical approach is compassion based. Although grounded in psychodynamic theory, health psychology, a clinical developmental and attachment based perspective. I work from an integrative and flexible theoretical position, drawing from warm spirituality- the wisdom traditions and ancient Buddhist truths, weaving them together with contemporary trauma theory (Briere). With everyday Buddhist Norm Fisher and Mark Epstein, Buddhist Psychoanalyst, I see the traumas of life, even the everyday ones such as fear and loneliness, as universal, and opportunities for growth -- and the heart ("affectivity") as the place where true healing can occur. Most of my speciality work, training, skills, experience and significant expertise pertain to severe stress and trauma - coping and healing, for children, including very young children, their parents/caregivers, adolescents, adults. I work with children/adolescents in time and place, and in emotional space - thus, always within their contexts.Read more

Dr. Ruebsamen says...

As a Pediatric Trauma Psychologist for twenty years, I eventually founded Abbey Psychological Services to provide assessment, treat the effects of severe stress/trauma on children; teach in doctoral programs, develop/direct intern training programs, supervise, consult. I am expert at psychodiagnosis, psychological assessment, supervising trauma treatment for high risk children & youth in impoverished, marginalized, violence-saturated neighborhoods & schools.

As a global humanitarian, I'm Founding Executive Director of Always Be Listening Global Initiative 501(c)(3), a global humanitarian nonprofit for forcibly displaced, war/armed conflict affected children in refugee camps at border regions. We are dedicated to conducting brief, precise trauma assessments to determine their direct war experiences, ways of coping, and remaining posttraumatic symptoms in order to knowledgeably place them into appropriate, effective treatment groups.

Dr. Ruebsamen says...

My patients get better, especially the youngest! I am compassionate and relationship centered, trauma sensitive & reflective, using results of psychological assessment to inform clinical hypotheses in order to gain access to the direct, inner experience of my patients, knowledgeably and accurately selecting clinical interventions. I work with awareness of the many, shifting contexts that surround them, .

Working together, our aim is to co-create a new, story - healthier, more coherent narrative, rather than the old broken story . . .
