In his early career, Dr. Benson pursued interests in cardiac electrophysiology at Duke (1975-81) and the University of Minnesota (1981-86) and introduced this discipline to pediatric cardiology. In, 1986, he became Director of Cardiology at Children s Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University where he remained for nearly 10 years. In 1995 he took a leave of absence from Northwestern University, and under the auspices of a NIH Senior Fellowship trained to become an investigator in the molecular genetics of pediatric heart disease.
