Dr. Hansen says...

My background before physical therapy is in exercise physiology and strength and conditioning.  This helps me develop plans for progression of where a patient's current state is to the appropriate functional status that we are trying to achieve with a rehabilitation and exercise program.

Because of the more extensive knowledge of exercises and exercise program progression, this allows me the ability to breakdown the patient's problems and specifically address the weakness, flexibility, stability, or imbalance problems that are associated with an injury. As a physical therapist it is important to be able to treat the associated limitations that may be present at the same time you helping work to improve the specific area of concern.

My understanding of exercise program progression also allows me to transition people back to their desired level of activity, whether it be functional activities around the home or transitioning back into an activity such as running or golf.

Dr. Hansen says...

A variety of procedures are used to provide the most efficient and comfortable treatments possible for patients, but the most common treatments that are used are exercise and manual therapy.  There are many research studies that have been done and are continuing to be done that demonstrate the benefit of these treatment techniques in improving pain and function in individuals with a variety of conditions.

Manual therapy has been shown to help improve pain levels early on when initiating a physical therapy program and studies have shown that there is can be a lasting effect in the improved pain symptoms after a significant time.  Manual therapy can include joint mobilizations, massage or soft tissue mobilization, and exercises.

Exercise has been shown to improve pain levels in patients participating in physical therapy programs and last effects have been seen by those who have participated in and continue to participate in an exercise program.
