I believe that the fundamental purpose of medicine is to help another human being to navigate the obstacles that block adaptation to change. There are many modalities that can help clear individual roadblocks, but I find Chinese medicine to be unique in its development of a whole system for restoring and enhancing the ability to adapt to whatever obstacles come along, whether the obstacle originates in the mind or the body.
I believe that Chinese medicine can teach us to see what medicine can be with new eyes; to drop practices that do not promote healing and relieve suffering; to adopt new practices that may never have occurred to us; and to continue to evolve the rest. I hope that in the years to come, we will no longer need to call it Chinese medicine; instead, I hope that it can be a medicine that we have integrated into our own culture.
