Angie Speller, LMHC
This is my fortune: "You have the ability to touch the lives of many people." Yes, it was the one that I read out of a cookie, but it fits me because my role is to be the fighter for the underdogs. As a woman of color, I understand what it's like to be in that position and to struggle to be visible and viewed as capable. So, I use my ability to connect with people, identify their emotions and their motives to help guide them towards insight and understanding. I've appreciated the times that someone has helped me make sense of things and now I enjoy doing it for others, working to find the puzzle pieces and figuring out the pattern of how everything fits together. When you really think about it, that's what therapy is—noticing the pieces of an abstract landscape and connecting the patterns, revealing a beautiful masterpiece. I know that one person doesn't have the ability to change the world, but I also know that one person affecting the lives of many can empower others to unite. Together, we can remake the world.

I utilize several theoretical orientations at any given time during a session. Based on that statement it is clear that I utilize a Gestalt Approach and make decisions based on the present moment. I also utilize Solution Focused, Person Centered, Experiential Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Narrative Therapy. Each theoretical orientation offers viable solutions for the same concerns, but the way of getting to the solution is the key.

For Example: If/ When I am working with a client that, as a default, is more pragmatic and finds him/her self using logic to identify their internal conflicts, CBT is not the orientation of choice because of the fact that it keeps that person stuck in the same frame of reference, which obviously isn't yielding the results they are seeking. I would use a combination of Experiential Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy to create a clearer path towards resolution. A paradigm shift is most often needed.
