Dr. Yakes is Director of the Yakes Vascular Malformation Center, an Interventional Neuroradiology and Interventional Radiology Specialist at Swedish Medical Center and the Colorado Neurological Institute in Englewood, Colorado. Dr. Yakes' early years as a student and ROTC candidate at St. Mary's grade school and Central Catholic High School proved to be the perfect springboard to his undergraduate education at Rice University, where he earned a double major in Biology and Psychology. From there, he earned his medical degree at Creighton University School of Medicine. Dr. Yakes first applied his medical knowledge in the military, serving nearly 12 years in the U.S. Army, including war service in Operation Desert Storm 1990-1991. He was honorably discharged in 1991. Dr. Yakes has sub-specialty training and certification in Radiology, Interventional Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology. Dr. Yakes pioneered the curative treatment of vascular malformations with being the first physician to use absolute ethanol to curatively treat AVMs. Dr. Yakes has published extensively on the topic of the diagnosis and treatment of vascular malformations of all types, was invited and developed centers of excellence around the world to treat vascular malformations, has lectured extensively at national and international medical society meetings and universities, and has treated patients suffering from vascular anomalies from every continent. Dr. Yakes is Past President of the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA).
