Board certification should be one of your top considerations when choosing a doctor. Board certification is an official recognition given to doctors who have met specific requirements set by national medical specialty boards in the United States.
Board certification indicates that a doctor is highly qualified in the medical field in which he or she practices. A board-certified doctor is more likely than a non-board-certified doctor to have the most current skills and knowledge about how to treat your medical condition.

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.

I have been a practicing surgeon since 1996. I started offering bariatric surgical procedures to my patients in 1999. After treating patients with a variety of bariatric procedures, in 2007, I decided to commit my practice to treating individuals who struggle with weight. And after a 16 year experience with weight loss surgery and participation in two clinical trials for stomach balloons and multiple multicenter studies with gastric bands, I have decided to focus my practice on early management of obesity and morbid obesity. Accordingly, I strictly offer stomach balloons and gastric bands (Lap Band surgery) to my patients. Both of these procedures require surgical practices to remain engaged in the care of patients after the initial implantation of balloons and bands. My team and I provide comprehensive pre and post implantation education and post procedure care at a very personal level. To best meet my patients' needs, I provide individualized care to each and every one of my patients by making myself available to my patients in person, by phone, or by electronic mail.
Dr. Shayani has been in practice since 1996 and has been offering surgical options to the morbidly obese patients since 1999. During this period, he has performed more than 2000 bariatric surgical procedures, since 2007, more than 95% of his practice is dedicated to treatment of obesity and bariatric surgery. It is Dr. Shayani's strong belief that 'Bariatric Surgery is best offered as a full-time job.'
