DO NOT DO A HIP REPLACEMENT AT UCSF!! I had a surgery done in 2016 and have had nothing but problems with it. UCSF uses a very invasive, posterior approach for hip replacements. I am having continual problems with my psoas and gluteus medius muscles, which I suspect may have been damaged from the invasive surgery. If you need a hip replacement, go to the Coon Institute instead. They use an anterior approach for surgery, which is much less invasive. Avoid UCSF!!!

I cannot say enough about Dr. Vail. For years I was in pain and after my partial knee replacement, I was up and walking within a couple of hours (not unusual as they want you to do this) but my pain has never been above a 2 on a scale of 10. I don't know if this is the norm but I can tell you I have my life back. I did a lot of research on surgeons in the bay area and found out that he's one of the top there is. Not only that but frankly ALL of UCSF was excellent. Color me grateful.

I am 57 years old and had a total hip replacement performed by Dr. Vail on December 22 2015. Literally, I was walking around the hospital with 1 crutch at noon that day. I was in no pain, no bruising, no swelling, and only taking tylenol the following week. I never had to use a grabber, extended shoe horn, etc. Bottom Line- Immediately my leg felt like it did when I was 19. No restrictions. Dr. Vail and his team are THE BEST. I cannot picture an easier or better experience.
