I met Doc Schuler during my first appointment at the Virginia Spine Institute and learned more about my back, discs, scoliosis, symptoms and treatment options than I had learned in a year of seeing other doctors and specialists. I could not stand for more than two minutes when I came through the door. I was at a pain level 9+. Throughout several treatments and appointments (and even a phone call directly with him), I was able to understand why physical therapy and shots were not managing my pain: my problems were mechanical, unique due to my spinal curve, genetics and deteriorating discs. Doc Schuler and his team explained the details and expectations of the suggested surgery with confidence and clarity that gave me the strength to pursue it. They performed two surgeries on me at Reston Hospital in the same week and walked me through recovery in the days and weeks after, taking as much time as I requested. I've never been in a doctor's office where I felt so important and supported.

I came to VSI with a failed fusion, painful hardware, and nerve pain in my right leg. My quality of life was terrible. I could not even go to the grocery store due to my pain level. I lived like this for 4 1/2 years. I was told by other doctors that there was no treatment for me except pain management. Now I'm 7 months post op and I could not be happier. I sleep at night and can do many activities with little to no pain. Thank you Dr. Schuler for taking my case! Now I can actually live my life again. I cannot thank you enough!

Dr. Schuler and his team work together to integrate a quality care experience focused on the patient. From detailed and timely imaging, to coordination with health care providers (health insurance, primary care doctors, specialists, and Reston Hospital) everything moved forward in a smooth, supportive and productive manner. I will certainly refer others to the amazing team.

Truly life-changing experience. Before surgery I was almost completely inhibited to no, and I mean almost zero, walking or standing. Now it's like I'm in my early 20s again. Great experience from pre-op to surgery to post-op follow-up visits. If you are thinking of getting spine surgery, this is the place to go... truly a 10 out of 10!!

I started experiencing back pain about 5 years ago. It progressed to the point where I needed help. I met Dr. Schuler about two years ago. He took a very serious methodical approach to my diagnosis. As he is a surgeon I was expecting the need for surgery. That was not the case. Surgery was the last option on Dr. Schuler's list. He took a conservative approach starting with physical therapy. It helped but not enough to live an active life style. After further testing we discovered I was a good candidate for Regenerative Stem Cell Therapy. I'm at my six month mark with minimal pain, some days no pain at all. Dr. Schuler and his staff are in my opinion the best of the best and I am forever great full to them.

Dr. Schuler and his team explain the spinal procedure, recovery, etc., in great detail. I know they are invested in my health/recovery and I never feel rushed through a visit. The spinal fusion eliminated my pain and need to use a cane. I cannot be happier and recommend him often. I am so grateful!

After a disappointing experience with another provider, I came to Dr. Schuler for a second opinion and I am so thankful I did. If I'd followed my original doctor's recommendation, I would have gone through surgery and had little to no pain relief. Now, only 3 months after my fusion, my back pain is gone and I'm looking forward to getting back to the activities I enjoy.

I have had a great experience with Dr. Schuler. He completed my Cervical fusion in 2010 and I returned in 2018 for Lumbar fusion. In the office, he reviewed my films and outlined his expectations and treatment plans His care both in and out of surgery has been exemplary! The entire team including the office staff are phenomenal. His Physician Assistants are knowledgeable, friendly and and skilled. I would highly recommend Dr Schuler for any spinal concerns.

Six months ago I was soliciting opinions from spinal surgeons and was not happy with the prognosis. Both doctors I saw gave me a brief overview, talked about the hardware going in my back, and gave me a long term recovery. I heard about Virginia Spine and decided to see if they had anything different (not expecting it to be so since the other two doctors agreed). Dr. Shuler sat with me and went through my XRays, my MRI, and with a plastic spine to show me the problem a...

I am currently one month post op from my L4-L5 SI fusion and I never thought I could feel this great. A car accident had me feeling like I was going to have to change my lifestyle due to my injuries. Dr. Schuler and his staff have completely given me my life back. From pre-op care, to the surgery, and even post-op care this team here at VSI is world class. I feel so blessed to have found Virginia Spine Institute. So far things are going better than I could have ever imagi...

I am so very thankful for the care given to me by Dr. Schuler and his staff. I have been a patient of VSI for over ten years. For me, the surgery was literally a miracle allowing me to regain my active life. I had suffered from low back and neck pain my entire life. I'm not one to jump into surgery and willing to try all other therapies first. I followed all instructions regarding my care (exercise, PT, injections) unfortunately at some point you have to accept t...

I tried several months of conservative treatment and came to the point that I had no choice but to see a surgeon. I was very apprehensive and concerned about the long-term effects of having spinal surgery. The entire team was fantastic, and Dr. Schuler spent more time with me that I expected. I was pleased that he listened, cared, and was able to offer a conservative procedure. I went from weeks of 9/10 pain daily, to pain-free within days of the surgery!
