Dr. Matthews attended medical school at UAB in Birmingham, Alabama and received his MD in 2004. He completed UAB General Surgery residency training in 2009 and served as Administrative Chief Resident of his residency class. He completed his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at UAB in 2011 and joined the UAB Academic Faculty as Assistant Professor. He served as an attending surgeon for 5 years at UAB Hospital, Birmingham VA Hospital, The Children's Hospital of Alabama, and Cullman Regional Medical Center. He served as the Associate Program Director of the Vascular Surgery Residency and Fellowship training programs during this time and trained 10 Vascular Surgeons in this capacity prior to his move to Georgia.
