Dr. Fishler's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Fishler "Dr. Thomas Fishler was born and raised in Riverside, California, where he grew to love the desert from a very young age. After a back injury prevented him from continuing to play football, he devoted his athletic energy to weight training. From this he developed a fascination with musculoskeletal anatomy, which was the foundation of his interest in orthopedic surgery. After graduating summa cum laude from the University of California-Riverside, he moved onto medical training at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where his interest in orthopedics deepened. While a medical student, he was accepted into the prestigious Howard Hughes Medical Institute-National Institutes of Health Research Scholars Program, in which he devoted 2 years to productive laboratory research involving a genetically altered mouse model of cancer. In his time as an HHMI-NIH Research Scholar, he was also selected to attend the International Achievement Summit, a gathering that brings together highly accomplished individuals in the arts, sciences, politics, and business with highly promising participants in the most renowned graduate fellowships, including Kennedy and Rhodes scholars. After an orthopedics-focused final year of medical school, he elected to pursue residency training at Yale-New Haven Hospital. At Yale, which boasted a busy Level 1 trauma center, he immediately fell in love with orthopedic trauma, the complexity of the injuries, and the equally thoughtful approaches to treat them. He found an enduring mentorship under Dr. Michael Baumgaertner, President of AO North America, who taught him the rigor and attention to detail needed to manage the severely injured patient. He also found a role model in Dr. Kristaps Keggi, a pioneer of anterior total hip arthroplasty with decades of experience in that procedure. His early interest in musculoskeletal anatomy blossomed as he secured prizes, including the top prize as a chief resident, in the resident anatomy exam in three of the five years of residency. Ultimately Dr. Fishler chose to pursue fellowship training in orthopedic trauma at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. The birthplace of the orthopedic trauma subspecialty and the only Level 1 trauma center for 5 states in the Northwest, Harborview provided Dr. Fishler with an unparalleled experience in treating the most high energy and challenging injuries to the musculoskeletal system, all under the tutelage of some of the most meticulous and exacting surgeons in the world. Dr. Fishler augmented his experience there with additional time devoted exclusively to pelvic and acetabular fractures with Dr. Chip Routt of Houston, Texas. Dr. Fishler's clinical interests in trauma include the polytraumatized patient, pelvic/acetabular fractures, complex foot injuries, periarticular fractures, and soft tissue injuries. On an elective basis, his interests include complications arising from trauma and its treatment, including nonunion, malunion, and arthritis, as well as anterior total hip arthoplasty. In his spare time Dr. Fishler enjoys fitness, music, style, fine cuisine and wine, and spending time with his beautiful daughter."
