Dr. Tarquinio's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Tarquinio "Dr. Tarquinio joined Reliant Medical Group as the orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon in August 2013, after spending the previous 17 years on the faculty of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he directed the orthopedic foot and ankle service. He is actually returning to Worcester, where he previously was a member of the orthopedic department of Saint Vincent Hospital. Dr. Tarquinio is excited about returning to New England and the opportunity to provide a new orthopedic subspecialty within the growing Reliant orthopedic department. In his practice Dr. Tarquinio specializes in treating patients who are experiencing a wide variety of foot and ankle disorders. "I do everything from providing simple advice to performing surgery for problems including fractures and arthritis of the ankle and foot, tendon problems, nerve problems, and also bunions and hammertoes," he explains. Dr. Tarquinio enjoys the different ways he gets to assist his patients. "I like the fact that I can help my patients with a simple problem that just requires counseling or something more severe and incapacitating that might need surgery. Even though my patients may have a severe foot or ankle problem, they are often healthy and it's great to help them maintain the active lifestyle they love." According to Dr. Tarquinio, a lot of the foot and ankle problems people develop after 50 are due to wear and tear. "Unfortunately, our joints and tendons can wear out because of repetitive use. There are multiple joints in the foot and ankle that can develop arthritis. In many cases we use surgery to fuse the bones together so they are stable and less painful. Many tendon disorders can be improved with tendon transfers. Implants can also be used in the foot and ankle to help different types of conditions." Some of the surgeries that Dr. Tarquinio performs can be truly life-changing. "I have operated on people whose arthritis or deformity was so bad that they had to use a wheelchair, and after surgery they were able to walk again. One of the great things about being an orthopedic surgeon is using your skills to make a difference for people." Like a lot of orthopedists, Dr. Tarquinio has a big interest in sports. He especially likes college football and also enjoys major league baseball – especially the Red Sox. Dr. Tarquinio also loves playing golf, cooking and spending as much time as possible with his wife, children and grandchildren."
