Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Lichtman "For the past 20 years, I have been actively involved in treating older patients with cancer. As life expectancy has been increasing, the number of older patients with cancer has also been increasing. They have become the majority of the patients that we evaluate and treat, and as such, they need to become the focus of our endeavors. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has organized the 65+ Clinical Geriatric Group, part of its Cancer and Aging program, to achieve that goal. The group, which I chair, is composed of experts in geriatrics, finance, nutrition, occupational therapy, music therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychiatry, social work, palliative care, medical and surgical oncology. We meet on a monthly basis to plan on an ongoing basis the building of an infrastructure for multidisciplinary geriatric oncology care in the institution. A database is being organized to assess the group s activity and evaluate outcomes. The work of the 65+ Clinical Geriatric Program to date has demonstrated that a geriatric evaluation and support program can be conducted in the setting of a Comprehensive Cancer Center. Future activities will include development of institutional guidelines for multidisciplinary geriatric care and further research in this area. We need guidelines for treating our aging cancer population; they deserve nothing less. In addition, I have also been an active participant in a number of research organizations, including the Cancer and Leukemia Group B s (CALGB) Committee on Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and the Cancer in the Elderly Committee; the Scientific Advisory Board of the Geriatric Oncology Consortium; the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) and its Taskforces on Geriatric Assessment, Renal Dysfunction, and Chemotherapy. I was on the Program Committee for the 2005 and 2006 meetings of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and led the Patient Care Tract. There was a special edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology in May 2007 on the topic of Geriatric Oncology which I edited. I currently serve on the NCCN Guidelines Taskforce for the treatment and Evaluation of Older Women with Breast Cancer. This year, I was a faculty member of the ASCO Educational Session devoted to the pharmacology of chemotherapy in older patients. I will also continue my faculty position for the Vail ASCO/AACR Clinical Trails Workshop. My clinical interests have been in the treatment of gynecologic malignancies, colon cancer solid tumors, and the study of supportive care and quality of life, especially as it relates to the older cancer patient. I have been named to head the Chemotherapy Taskforce of SIOG and I am a member of the Renal Toxicity Taskforce. I will also be a participant on the Program Committee of the 2006 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology by leading the Patient Care Tract. My clinical interests have been in the treatment of gynecologic malignancies, lymphoma, solid tumors, and the study of supportive care and quality of life."
