    Conditions Treated

    Dr. Smith says..

I treat uterine fibroids with UFE and did the first one in Illinois in 1998. I have done research and patient education about UFE, and work to help patients avoid hysterectomy. Surgery is over-performed for economic reasons, despite all modern advances.

Varicocele embolization is an altenative to surgery, as effective but safer. I have done it since 1985, but patients are often pushed toward surgery by urologists (surgeons). Our website www.varicoceles.com offerers information and a list of referral doctors.

Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) is female varicocele. It causes severe pelvic pain, but the veins are often not detected by a woman's doctor, since they are internal.  We can find and eliminate these veins and stop pain. Many patients with PCS are classified as "crazy", sadly, by other doctors.

Osteoporotic spine fractures are evaluated and non-surgically treated in our practice, with kyphoplasty.  I have done this since 1999, done research, and do a high volume of cases yearly.

I have board certification to treat peripheral arterial disease and have performed balloon angioplasty since 1983. I placed the first commercially available self expanding stent in a patient in Illinois.  I have long experience in arterial thrombolysis, atherectomy, and we use non-Xray laser guided artery drills to open long blocked leg arteries. We are a referral site for treating severe arterial blockages outside the heart.

We perform cryoablation of kidney cancer using image guidance.  Also, microwave destruction of lung cancer and liver cancer.

I perform stenting of colon cancer to relieve obstruction in poor surgical candidates. I evaluate and treat liver disease with TIPS and BRTO.

We do continuing research about and perform removal of deep vein clots in leg and central veins.

I have a special interest in image guided removal of foreign bodies (pins, surgical towels, catheters, stitches, misplaced items) without surgery, and invented and published a method to do this in 1994.

    Why Does Experience Matter?

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.
