Dr. Hughes is an expert in the spine surgery. In 2014 he operated on one of my herniated disc, and a few days later I was free of pain and "0" limitation with my activities. This month I am back with Dr. Hughes as I was wanted a second advice for new back issues. Results are two areas with nerve pinched. I would not let anyone else to make any diagnosis and treat my spine. I highly recommend Dr Hughes.

Having had a laminectomy 35 years ago and living with the chronic pain I experienced after that, another spinal surgery was the last thing I wanted. However, excruciating pain that prevented me from walking, sitting or standing kept me bedridden for three months. I tried, physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic and spinal injections to no avail. I finally saw Dr. Hughes at the recommendation of my pain doctor. He recommended laminectomy with fusion. What a miracle, I was walking, sitting and standing the day after my surgery. I am now 3 months post op and I would say that I am 92% healed. I walked almost 4 1/2 miles yesterday! Looking back, I wish I did not allow myself to suffer as long as I did and had the surgery much sooner. I'd like to add that I am 75 years old.

Dr. Hughes has treated me on and off for about 15 years. I wouldn’t go to anyone else. He treats me like a person and explains things in ways easy to understand. Surgeries he’s performed on my spine always fixed the excruciating problems. I just love him!

I was very impressed with the offices protocol for cover-19 practices before and after I entered the office. All the staff explained everything that was going to go on during the visit. Dr. Hughes went over the tests and results that I had prior to my visit in an easy to understand manner. He gave me time to ask questions and his answers were clear and not condescending. Everything I needed was for treatment going forward was reading before I left. It was a very pleasent experience!

It was a quick and “to the point” appointment which I truly appreciated. Instead of Dr Hughes putting me on more meds, he decided to get a scan done to look at the exact issues. Exactly what I needed as I was tired of my previous orthopedic having me go through meds and PT knowing that none of that working and I kept insisting that they need to first look at the issue via MRI. Definitely recommend Dr Hughes and OrthoVirginia!!

Dr Hughes performed Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery on my C5/C6 and C6/C7 vertebrae in early April. I was a first time surgical patient and was apprehensive about getting the procedure. I came to Dr. Hughes with shooting pain/tingling in my right arm, and numbness in my right index finger. Dr. Hughes and his staff did a great job of explaining my ailment and how the surgery would correct the problem. To complicate matters, my procedure was scheduled during the height of the Coronavirus crisis. My condition was getting worse, a significant delay in the surgery could have resulted in permanent damage. Dr. Hughes advocated on my behalf and I was able to get the procedure completed. As soon as I woke up in the post op recovery room, my pain/numbness were gone. I am on the path to making a full recovery. Lastly, Dr. Hughes and his staff did a thorough job of preparing me for what to expect both before and after surgery.

I had previous surgery by Dr. Hughes, a double laminectomy and spinal fusion. My recovery went very well. That was 9 years ago. I now have a separate issue with my back. Dr. Hughes clearly explained what he thought to be my problem. He has ordered an MRI and CT scan, which will a better picture of what is wrong. I’m glad to have Dr. Hughes treating me again.

On 3/15/19, I was biking up a hill & pushed hard on the left pedal. Something popped in my lower back causing intense pain. I almost fell off and had to take a pain reliever to even straighten up. On 6/12, Steven took X-rays and recommended cortisone injections. On another Dr's advice, I got an MRI in July, which showed herniated discs between L4-L5 and L5-S1 that were impinging on the spinal cord! I had 2 shots w/o relief. On 9/12/19, Steven said: 1) I didn't need more shots and was fine (even though I had intense back & leg pain when walking even 100 yards); 2) no surgeon would operate on me; 3) pushing on a pedal could not herniate a disc. After 10 min, he advised me, a 67-year old who was biking 100+ mi/wk, to work through the pain or accept that am older and reduce my activities! He dismissed my issues because of my age! Postscript: an excellent surgeon did a laminectomy on L4, L5, S1 in Nov 2019 and after 3 mo, I am back biking & walking w/o pain.

This was a follow up after two visits to Spine & Health for epidurals in the C4 area. I have another injury in my shoulder from the same fall. Dr. Hughes doesn't rush to surgery so he instructed me get the shoulder fixed first before making a decision on the neck.

Hughes is the most unprofessional doctor I’ve had the displeasure of seeing. A total visit of over an hour was marked by ~3 minutes with the man, where he gave me a diagnosis that didnt encompass the symptoms which he didn’t even bother to ask about. He then suggested I make another appointment to get an mri (without explaining why) and see his assistant another day. Outrage barely begins to describe sheer amount of anger I felt as a result of seeing this man. I would rather cut my own back open and do my own spine surgery than see a doctor like Hughes. I urge you if you have any serious issues, please find someone who is invested in your health and who takes many variables consideration.
