He is a Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN, where he majored in Biology. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Louisville School of Medicine before serving an internship at the university's hospital. Dr. Howell received his residency training at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital at the University of Alabama in Birmingham before going on to complete an additional year of fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky Department of Ophthalmology, where he taught and supervised future ophthalmologists in the areas of pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus from 2007 to 2009. Dr Howell has also served on the Board of Trustees for Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS) and the Kentucky Museum of Arts and Crafts (KMAC)."
