      Why Does Experience Matter?

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.

      Dr. Cahalan says...

Hi, I am Steve Cahalan. I grew up in Des Moines, graduating from Hoover in 1977. I did undergrad and med school at the University of Iowa. My residency was at Iowa Methodist. I did a two month advanced Laparoscopic training program in Kansas City (1994) before there were fellowships and I have personally trained over 100 surgeons to perform laparoscopic surgeries.

I have been practicing in the Des Moines area since 1989. I started doing Bariatric surgeries in 2003 and have done hundreds of bariatric operations since then.

      God Bless you!

      Dr. Cahalan's Care Philosophy

I believe in a coordinated team approach to success with weight loss surgery. We have the best support around. Hands down! Most patients do very well after their weight loss surgery. However, some struggle. Many programs abandon their patients when they are struggling. I have the opposite approach. I want to help my bariatric surgery patients when they struggle. In fact, we often receive referrals from other programs for patients who are having post-operative problems.

Please consider our program for your weight loss surgery.

      Dr. Cahalan says...

I have done over 500 Gastric Bypasses, 500 Lap Bands and, as of July 1, 2015, 400 Gastric Sleeve operations for weight loss. I have never had a post-operative death and my complication rate is among the lowest in Iowa.

      Dr. Cahalan says...

I was among the first surgeons to perform laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries in 1990. Since then I was the first to perform laparoscopic colon, spleen and bile duct surgeries in Iowa. I have trained over a hundred surgeons to do these and other General Surgery operations. However, I do all of my patient's bariatric operation, these are not done here by a resident.

My primary focus since 2003 has been Bariatric surgery. I have done over 1000 Bariatric procedures. Currently, most of those surgeries are the Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve operation. Please call  515-241-2250 for times and dates for our upcoming Educational Lectures about the current state of Bariatric surgery.
