Dr. Sawin graduated at the top of his class from the University of Rochester School of Medicine where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed both his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and his Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Pennsylvania, during which time he won the medical student teaching award. After fellowship, Dr. Sawin moved to North Carolina where he was the director of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility for the Mountain Area Health Education Center. During his five years in North Carolina, Dr. Sawin won two teaching awards for his work with resident physicians. He has special interest and expertise in the areas of in vitro fertilization (IVF), the surgical management of uterine fibroids (myomectomy) including the minimally invasive technique of laparoscopic robotic myomectomy and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Dr. Sawin has performed over 3,000 IVF procedures and over 2,000 surgical procedures in his career. He has published extensively and has been invited to speak at local and national scientific meetings. He has published research on the safety of myomectomy for uterine fibroids, the role of tubal hydrosalpinx on IVF success rates and the proper development of the endometrium and its effect on embryonic implantation. He is a two time recipient of the Philadelphia Area Reproductive Endocrine Society Award for original research in infertility as well as the S Leon Isreal award given by the Philadelphia Obstetrical Society. In addition, he has twice been awarded the Medical Professional Appreciation Award by the Polycystic Ovary Association, a national patient support group for PCOS. Dr. Sawin is the past President of the Philadelphia Area Reproductive Endocrine Society (PARES). He has helped to educate numerous OB/GYN physicians preparing for their board certification exams by lecturing at several board review courses. At the national level, he recently completed service on the Practice Subcommittee on Reproductive Endocrinology of the American College of OB/GYN, which helps set the national standards for appropriate Fertility care. Dr. Sawin is also the Director of the Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis program and Assistant Director of IVF at South Jersey Fertility Center.
