Dr. Pezzella's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Pezzella "After graduating from St. Louis University Medical School, Dr. Stephen Pezzella became the very first cardiology fellow at the University of Massachusetts and joined Reliant Medical Group after his fellowship in 1978 . Dr. Pezzella has seen great advancements take place in cardiology since he first started practicing. "Thanks to new cardiac care technologies, we can do so much more for patients now than we could before. For example, when someone is having a heart attack, stents can be inserted to help avoid damage to the heart wall muscle – we couldn't do that 15 years ago. The less invasive technologies we have now such as angioplasty have really opened up a lot of doors for people, improving their quality of life," he explains. According to Dr. Pezzella, patients that have a damaged heart can also be helped by advanced technologies such as a cardiac defibrillator – an implantable device that shocks the heart back into a normal rhythm when patients have an arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat). "Our real goal is preventing the first heart attack, but if a patient does have damage to the heart there's a lot we can do to help them enjoy a better quality of life – the technology we use is state-of-the-art and is improving all the time." Dr. Pezzella believes the recent changes in cardiology are really two-fold. "Prevention is now recognized as being very important and primary care physicians are doing a great job of emphasizing that. In addition, new methods like electrophysiology and interventional cardiology have become extremely important, and along with more sophisticated diagnostic testing has really changed how we can help patients. It's truly an exciting time to be a cardiologist." A life-long native of Worcester, Dr. Pezzella grew up on Shamrock Street, not far from the Worcester Medical Center. His daughter Andrea is an award-winning OB-Gyn physician and his brother is a semi-retired cardiac surgeon who practiced in Worcester and now does missionary work in China. When he is not busy with his patients, Dr. Pezzella enjoys playing the local golf courses and spending time at his summer home on Cape Cod with his family. Dr. Pezzella also enjoys collecting sports memorabilia and has a few notable items in his collection, including a signed ball from Pedro Martinez and a picture of Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle and Joe Dimaggio. "Although I'm a life-long Red Sox fan, I do appreciate great ballplayers, even if they happen to be from the Yankees.""
