This content was provided by Dr. Merola "Stephen Merola, M.D. Vice Chairman, Patient Safety & Quality Chief, Section of General, Minimally Invasive & Bariatric Surgery Department of Surgery NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery Weill Cornell Medicine Stephen Merola, M.D., is chief of the section of General, Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens as well as the vice chairman for patient safety and quality in the Department of Surgery. He is a board-certified and fellowship-trained surgeon specializing in minimally invasive general and bariatric surgery, as well as emergency and trauma surgery. Dr. Merola graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in 1991 with a B.A in biology. He earned his medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and went on to complete a five-year general surgery residency at NYU Medical Center, training at Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital, and the Manhattan VA Hospital. He then completed a one-year fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center. His practice focuses on the use of laparoscopy in the performance of bariatric, foregut, colorectal, solid organ and hernia repairs. At NY-Presbyterian/Queens since 2002, Dr. Merola has assumed leadership and oversight responsibilities for many hospital areas related to quality, safety, and education. He directed the fellowship program in surgery and chaired the surgical peer review/quality assurance committee for over 10 years. Prior to coming to NewYork-Presbyterian/Queens, Dr. Merola was an attending surgeon at North Shore University Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and Saint Francis Hospital on Long Island. He was also previously a clinical instructor in surgery at the NYU School of Medicine. In addition to his active clinical practice, Dr. Merola has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, such as Obesity, Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases (SOARD), Surgical Endoscopy, Robotic Surgeons Quarterly, and the Journal of the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons (JSLS). He has also co-authored a chapter on "Laparoscopic Colectomy" in the Primer of Robotic & Telerobotic Surgery."

Dr. Merola operated on me in 2008. He operated on my sister and my friend. There is not a day that passes that I regret having bi pass surgery. He is trustworthy and knows what he is doing.
