After graduation from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after serving four years. He then received a General Motors scholarship to the University of Southern California and, after three years, was accepted into the USC School of Medicine. Following graduation, he did a one year rotatting internship at the LAC-USC Medical Center followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at the same institution. He then did a fellowship in Diseases and surgery of the Retina and Vitreous at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. Upon returning to Southern California, he was appointed to the faculty at USC and was in charge of the retina clinic. During this time, he developed a straight Ophthalmology internship at the Medical Center. Dr. Carson was the first retina doctor to establish private fluorescein angiographic clinics in Southern California. Also, he was among the first doctors in California to perform vitrectomy surgery in 1974. He founded South Coast Retina Center in 1971. The group now includes six board certified, fellowship trained retina-vitreous physicians serving the coastal communities of southern Los Angeles County and northern Orange County. Dr. Carson was an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology and also served as chief of staff of Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. At present, his primary interests are macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy."
