This content was provided by Dr. Eachempati "Dr. Soumitra Eachempat is Professor of Surgery and Attending Surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery in 2003 and Professor of Surgery in 2009. He is also a Professor of Medicine in Medical Ethics. Dr. Eachempati also serves as Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. A nationally-renowed surgeon, Dr. Eachempati is board-certified in surgical critical care and general surgery. Dr. Eachempati is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is a Fellow of the College of Critical Care Medicine. He is also a member of numerous other societies including the Surgical Infection Society, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society of University Surgeons, the Association of Academic Surgeons, the Western Trauma Association, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He has served as the President of the New York Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and is currently Chair of Applicant Interviews for the ACS Manhattan District #2. A prolific author, Dr. Eachempati has published over 240 publications, abstracts, and book chapters. He is currently editing a book entitled Acute Cholecystitis which studies and describes infections of the gallbladder and their management. In addition to his busy surgical clinical practice, Dr. Eachempati provides leadership in surgical education to fellows, residents and medical students. His research interests include topics pertinent to abdominal surgery, critical care, and trauma. Dr. Eachempati attended college at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he received a Bachelor's of Science in chemistry in 1987. He then went to Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois where he graduated in 1991 with an MD. He completed his general surgery internship and residency in 1996 from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. As a resident, Dr. Eachempati received multiple awards for teaching excellence. During this time, he was also selected to participate in an educational project in Hanoi, Vietnam where his group taught Vietnamese surgeons new techniques in laparoscopic surgery. After residency, Dr. Eachempati worked at Duke University Hospital where he completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care in 1997. During this time, he published multiple studies in critical care and trauma surgery. Following this fellowship, he received an academic appointment as an Instructor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine in 1997. Following one year as an attending surgeon at Duke, he moved to New York City to join the faculty of NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center."
