As a lifelong athlete myself, I have extensive experience in caring for athletes in different sports, from the recreational to the professional (NFL, NHL, soccer) level.  I have a dedicated subspecialty interest in cartilage restoration and joint preservation, where I have helped define the standard of care by publishing 13 book chapters and over 80 peer-reviewed abstracts and holding longtime leadership positions in the International Cartilage Repair Society.

Dr. Gortz says...

Procedures I perform include:

  • Knee ligament reconstruction
  • Knee meniscus repair or replacement
  • Cartilage restoration including osteochondral allografting and Matrix-Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (MACI)
  • Joint preservation including osteotomies
  • Rotator cuff repair
  • Shoulder stabilization

I have the luxury of drawing on my international experience of training at some of the most renowned programs in both the United States and Europe. In 2015, I was awarded the prestigious Kappa Delta Award by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery for my work in osteochondral allografting, and am one of the few surgeons in Arizona who is certified to perform Matrix-Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (MACI) to present my patients cutting edge options for biologic joint restoration.
