Dr. Dolgopolov's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Dolgopolov "Dr. Sergei Dolgopolov started surgical practice in Moscow, Russia in 1985 after graduating from Moscow Medical Academy and surgical residency. He continued his surgical education in SUNY Downstate Medical Heath Science Center at Brooklyn and joined Surgical Associates of New York in 2000. Dr. Dolgopolov is Board Certified in General Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. His areas of interest include oncologic, hepato-biliary, and pancreatic surgery as well as minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery. "When I was originally trained in Moscow, the emphasis at the time was in traditional open surgical techniques. The onset of minimally invasive surgery was originally hard for me, as I was an accomplished open technique surgeon. I strongly felt, however, that minimally invasive technique was not only the future of surgery, but also the absolute best option for the patients. I therefore worked harder than I had ever worked before to learn a skill set that required significant time and effort. This process of 're-training' has left me with two skill sets that put me in a powerful position to help my patients. I can make decisions from a perspective of knowledge and experience. In my estimation, the current training programs are desperately lacking in classical surgical technique, and when the time comes that this knowledge is needed in the operating room, the younger, newly trained surgeons are at a distinct disadvantage. Additionally, the process of learning for me has now become part of my daily existence. I believe the advances of technology combined with my level of experience allow for an exponential growth. I am currently advancing my skills with Robotic technique. At the same time, however, I will never relinquish my understanding and emphasis on classic technique, as this is the foundation of safety and knowledge I bring into the operating room every day."
