Dr. Sirlin, a native of New York City, has been in the practice of pediatric gastroenterology since 1985. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude with Honors in Biology, from Amherst College in 1976. He received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he was awarded the Bela Schick Prize in Pediatrics and was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in his junior year. After an internship and residency in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Sirlin completed a fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York in 1985. He practiced Pediatric Gastroenterology in Miami, Florida from 1985 to 1993, at both Miami Children's Hospital and Baptist Hospital of Miami. In 1993, he started the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Dr. Sirlin relocated to the Washington DC area in 2000, initially serving as Director of Investigational Procedures at Children's National Medical Center. He has been in practice in northern Virginia since 2002 and is proud to have been named by Washingtonian Magazine one of the "Top Doctors in the Washington DC Area" in 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014. Dr. Sirlin's approach to patient care was cited in the Health & Science Section of the Washington Post on March 18, 2014 ("What was making her son so sick? A doctor is frustrated by the diagnostic process."). He was also named as one of Northern Virginia Magazine's Top Doctors in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Though Dr. Sirlin is interested in all aspects of pediatric gastroenterology, his special affinity is for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, partially because Crohn's Disease was first described at the Mount Sinai Hospital, where he trained. Dr. Sirlin has been married for over 25 years and has two sons.

Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Sirlin "Our solo practice is a small, personalized, caring, friendly alternative to large multi-provider pediatric gastroenterology practices. All outpatients are seen in one office. New patients (younger than 22 years) are given one hour appointments and follow-up patients are given half hour appointments. Dr. Sirlin performs all procedures, which normally can be scheduled within a three week period. Results of laboratory, radiologic and pathology reports are relayed to families promptly. Our staff becomes familiar with patients and their families so that it is hoped that no one feels they are part of a system in which waiting time for appointments, returned phone calls, or prescription refills is unreasonable. Written reports regarding each patient visit are forwarded to referring doctors. A copy of this report is also sent to the child's family. Dr. Sirlin and one of the office staff speak fluent Spanish."

Dr. Sirlin is an exceptional doctor and human being. He took the time to truly understand my daughter's needs when other GI's wouldn't even try. My wife and I are happier than we have been for awhile knowing our child is in good hands. I couldn't provide a higher recommendation for Dr. Sirlin.

Our man issue is with scheduling and the front office. Every time I would call to schedule my sons checkup the receptionist (same lady every time) would get very annoyed at our availability. My son is Autistic and has MANY appointments throughout the week. She is just so rude and always made me feel as if I was disturbing her at trying to find a time that works. Also I have felt that the Doctor has just shoved an over the counter drug at my child instead of finding the source of the issues.

I would absolutely recommend Dr. Sirlin to friends or family. He is thorough and wants to get it right. Our pediatrician repeatedly misdiagnosed my daughter until we saw Dr. Sirlin who took the time to listen to her symptoms and respond with the appropriate medically necessary tests. I trust him to take care of her as an individual and that is hard to find these days.

Have brought both my boys to him -- one nine years ago (a toddler) and the other this year (a teenager) because I remember how great he was. He is still great! After other doctors and specialists had trouble diagnosing their GI problems accurately, it is refreshing to have a doctor who is a great diagnostician and solves the problem. He gives you plenty of time and makes you and your kids feel very comfortable. It's sometimes hard finding good doctors, but Dr. Sirlin is one of the best.

Horribly managed practice. We were given an appt for 10 AM.The Receptionist confirmed but later left a VM on my wife's phone ito confirm again.Having a colic baby, she did not check it.When we reached we were told we did not confirm & hence asked to wait. We patiently waited for 40 mins till our turn came. Then we were ushered to the exam room & asked to undress the baby & wait(30mins) for the doc only for the doc to show up & say we got to come back at 1! On r way out the receptionist misbehaved

My infant was struggling with extreme reflux and was losing weight quickly. Other doctors were not offering appointments for over a month, but Dr. Sirlin saw us right away and immediately started her on a course of treatment that has been working amazingly well. She had a few setbacks at the start while the medications were kicking in, and he was always available, even once late at night when we had to go to the hospital. I am so happy we found him. My daughter is now thriving.
