I try to take the approach of listening to what the teenagers have to say about whatever they have come to me for. I try to understand what they are worried about or what they want to change. I help them problem solve on how to make that change happen. I include parents, but I work to help the teenagers take an active role in their own health care. I try to help teenagers and their parents - or caregivers - navigate their changing relationship. I try not to "tell them what they have to do." That won't result in lasting change of habits, behaviors or ways of thinking. I also work to help young people with chronic health conditions take more control of their conditions instead of letting the health condition control them. I always try to help teenagers see the positives in their lives - and to recognize their own strengths and resilience in the face of difficult circumstances.
