Dr. Frommer's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Frommer "In high school, Dr. Frommer dreamed of being a cartoonist for Disney; however she received a scholarship to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) for engineering. Her father convinced her to take this generous scholarship and study engineering. Having an interest in medicine, she was excited to learn there was a field of Biomedical Engineering and agreed to attend RPI. Instead of creating cartoons, she had the opportunity to create medical devices, at which she excelled. During her studies at RPI, she learned about stem cells and the NIH supported Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP); this highly competitive program supports students interested in pursuing their medical degree and PhD (MD/PhD). She thought this was the perfect opportunity to be able to take an idea from the work bench and develop it for use in patients. In 2000, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from RPI and received the Paul B. Daitch award for outstanding senior in Biomedical Engineering. Her interest in stem cells and Biomedical Engineering, lead her to the MD/PhD program at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Her PhD thesis was a translational project to develop adult stem cell therapy for use in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy patients under internationally known advisors Catherine Verfaillie, MD and Paul Iaizzo, PhD. During her 10 years studying in Minnesota, she successfully defended her PhD thesis and completed her medical studies. Because Dr. Frommer was adopted from South Korea to an US Army family, she developed a love for travel and immersing herself into new cultures at an early age. Due to this love, she committed one year to participate in international medical work during her medical studies. Her travels took her to Israel, Belgium, Guatemala, Tanzania, and India. One of her projects in Tanzania involved working with HIV positive ladies teaching them how to sew and bead so that they could make items to sell for income to support their families. The feeling of pride she had, teaching these women a vocation that could better their lives, was immense and continues to impact her daily life. After medical school, she was accepted into the Brown University Plastic Surgery residency in Providence, RI. Here, she proved to be a compassionate and capable doctor, earning her the Resident of the Month and subsequent Resident of the Year 2014 for Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital. During residency, she had the opportunity to continue her love of international medical work by spending time and learning from world renowned Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgeons in Toronto at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Children's Hospital – Seoul National University Hospital. She was also fortunate to participate in an Operation Smile in Paraguay as a Regan Fellow. Dr. Frommer has always strived to provide the best medical care she can for her patients. She believes in the philosophy hope for the best and prepare for the worst," which means seek the highest quality training possible. This philosophy lead her to the Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery fellowship at Dell Children's Medical Center, where under Dr. Patrick K. Kelley and Dr. Raymond J. Harshbarger, she was exposed to a large volume of complex congenital and trauma craniofacial cases. During her fellowship, she had the amazing opportunity to work with the local organization, Austin Smiles, on a surgical mission trip to El Salvador performing much needed orthognathic surgery for cleft patients. After completing her fellowship, she happily accepted to stay in Austin and join the Craniofacial Team of Texas with her mentor Dr. Patrick Kelley.""

Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Frommer "Dr. Frommer believes that doctors should treat patients as they would want to be treated or how they would want a loved one treated. Because surgery and illness can be scary, Dr. Frommer takes the time to sit down with her patients to explain their condition, treatment options, surgical plan, and what to expect postoperatively. She has found that providing this kind of care for her patients helps them and their families recover better. Additionally, medicine is constantly changing; Dr. Frommer participates in research and attends conferences to stay up to date on state of the art medicine. "

Dr. Frommer is both excellent at surgery and a kind person. She knows how stressful it is for a parent to see their child in surgery, and is so reassuring. She's exactly the kind of doctor and surgeon you want taking care of your family.
