Dr. Kunkel graduated cum laude from Indiana University in 1978, where he was a Phi Betta Kappa. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1982.
Dr. Kunkel completed a categorical year in orthopedic surgery at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1983. He completed his residency at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center in Grand Rapids in 1987. He completed fellowships in sports medicine and knee reconstruction at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1987 and shoulder reconstruction at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario in 1988.
Dr. Kunkel is a consultant for Brebeuf Preparatory School and is an independent examiner for the NFL. He has made many presentations to professional groups and published numerous articles in medical journals. Dr. Kunkel is a clinical lecturer at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the National Basketball Association Team Physician Society and other medical organizations. He served as the team physician for the Indiana Pacers from 1988 to 2004 and the Indiana Fever from 2004 to 2006. Dr. Kunkel also served as the president of the NBA Team Physicians Society.
