Care Philosophy

This content was provided by Dr. Ruben "There are two qualities a doctor needs to have to be a good doctor: good judgement and empathy. It is surprising how often one or both of those conditions are unmet in the current health care climate. Elaborating further, this medical practice as an enterprise has a philosophy, and ours, as a primary care practice, embraces an ethical perspective on the physician-patient relationship. This perspective is summarized by the 6 C s : choice, competence, communication, compassion, continuity, and avoiding conflict of interest. In the swirl of the changes going on in American medicine, two individuals remain at the very heart of the matter: the patient and the physician. These encounters are often times of hope and healing, sometimes of hard realities and choices. In this environment of peripheral concerns (insurance companies, employers, regulators, managers, investors, others who are not privy to this private relationship), which can muddy medical care, the anchor that provides a moral safe harbor for the patient and physician is outlined in a code of ethics. Statements of medical ethics date back to the 5th Century; the Oath of Hippocrates is the best example. Codes of ethics have evolved to seek, as they do today, a balance between professional standards and contemporary legal standards in our changing society. We have adopted the current AMA s Code of Medical Ethics, reprinted here as follows: INSERT CODE These principles foster the intent to be honorable to our patients, to society, to other health professionals, and to ourselves. We will embrace new medical developments and practice guidelines and the new computer technology pertinent to the practice, i.e., the internet and all the opportunities to keep up with and disseminate medical information and solutions, computerized medical records with the proper safeguards, and any other tools for patient and staff learning, empowerment, collaboration, and communication. We support you in working with complementary forms of alternative health care and wish to empower you with mutual respect and regard as an informed consumer, indeed, encourage your responsibilty in self-health. We encourage a collaborative team approach, stressing prevention."
