This content was provided by Dr. Russo "About: Dr. Russell Russo is an orthopedic surgeon in New Orleans, Louisiana who is fellowship trained in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He completed his training in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital where he worked with the best minds in the field. While in Houston, Dr. Russo was a team physician for the Houston Texans, Houston Astros, Houston Rockets, and Houston Dynamo. He also took great pride in serving as assistant team physician to Rice University Athletics, including the Rice Football 2014 Hawaii Bowl Champions. Dr. Russo also served as a physician for NASA at the Johnson Space Center, helping the next generation of Astronauts prepare for an eventual mission to Mars. MISSION STATEMENT: Dr. Russo's mission is to bring the same level of care given to professional athletes and the astronaut corps back home to our young and aging athletes here in South Louisiana Background: Dr. Russo is excited to return to the city where he was born and raised. He decided he wanted to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine after an experiencing an ankle injury in high school. Dr. Charles Murphy assisted his return to play which sparked an interest that would lead to a career in orthopedic surgery. The special care Dr. Murphy exhibited is what sets the Orthopedic Center for Sports Medicine apart from the rest, and is why Dr. Russo chose to join Dr. Murphy's group and begin practicing the compassion and care every injured person deserves. Dr. Russo is a proud alumnus of the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans where he also completed his orthopedic surgery residency while working at the Interim Charity Hospital. Throughout his medical career, he has won several awards including a nomination for Medelita's National Resident of the yearaward, as well as paper of the year awards at the Louisiana Orthopedic Associationannual meeting, 3 years in a row. Dr. Russo's research has been featured in articles around the world, as well as in National Geographic's Inside America series. Dr. Russo's passion is to take state of the art care that can be found at the highest level of professional sports and at the country's finest medical institutions and bring that care and expertise home for our local athletes.
