There was almost no waiting once I checked in and staff was terrific. Dr Hartl also did not keep me waiting. He was straight forward in his examination and discussed his findings with me along with his recommendations. I felt comfortable and in good hands.

The Whole experience was flawless! I filled up my paper work online, arrived five minutes early to my appointment and was passed immediatly to the exam room. Five minutes later he appeared, had seen my films and was patient and clearly explained all that I needed to know. He answered my questions and never felt pressured that he had to leave. I have had many surgeries and he proved to have the best bed manners of any surgeon besides being a very skilled surgeon.

I can’t say enough about my experience with Dr. Hartl and his whole staff, from setting up my consultation visit through my post-op visit. Dr. Hartl delivered on his promise that I would wake up from surgery pain-free. I had surgery 13 days ago. My biggest problem now, which is a great problem to have, is that I feel so good that I would like to get back to doing all the things that my pain prevented me from doing pre-surgery, but I have to hold myself back in order to fully heal. Dr. Hartl truly was a Godsend!

Dr Hartl and his PA, Rebecca Huys Cramer, are incredibly competent and compassionate. He is extremely skilled in his diagnostic technique. His surgery was flawless. They both truly listen, respond, and maintain clear focus on the entire process. He is not dismissive and arrogant as many talented surgeons seem to be. The rest of the office is not quite up to his standard, however. Many calls went unanswered, information from other patients was sent to me by mistake, and a generally chaotic culture seemed to be the norm. He deserves better.

The MRI ordered by my primary care physician clearly indicated spine surgery. He then referred me to Dr. Hartl. Because my symptoms were not entirely typical, Dr. Hartl, had me undergo additional tests and examination in order to be sure that spine surgery was the proper approach. I appreciate the fact that Dr. Hartl did not rush to judgment. I would have liked to have had more details on what post-operation recovery entails and better availability of follow up consultation

I highly recommend Dr. Hartl. He was my second opinion regarding a schwannoma which needed to be resected and there was no doubt after our meeting that I would be switching my care and surgery to him. He is highly skilled and was confident that he could remove the tumor without negative nerve damage to the surrounding area. He did, and the surgery and recovery went smoothly and exceeded my expectations.

I’m writing to offer my highest recommendation for Dr. Hartl and his excellent team. Besides being a wonderful surgeon, he is empathetic, thoughtful and kind. I was referred to Dr. Hartl after months of being unable to walk and what seemed like endless X-rays, scans, and consultations, until the diagnosis of severe lumbar stenosis. It was a chaotic and miserable time. Dr. Hartl struck me as a rock of serenity. His direct manner, his thoughtful, clear explanations of the MRI images and the microscopic procedure he recommended; his listening to my concerns, generated a trust that led me to feel less vulnerable and safe enough to proceed with the surgery. The surgery was a success: that night I could stand up straight and walk. It was a bit like a toddler, but I’ve been in PT now, building strength and feeling so grateful that I can walk and resume my life. There’s a depth of gratitude I feel for Dr. Hartl that no words can adequately express—for his competence, judgement and his caring.

Dr. Hartl is one of those medical professionals who you trust ( and his team as well ) from the second you meet them. I had a disectomy and fusion (C5/6/7) which went very well - I interviewed 4 doctors (neurological and orthopedic surgeons) and he was without question the right choice for me. Admittedly, as the head of the Spine department at Weill Cornell it’s a challenge to secure an appointment it was well worth it.

Dr. Hartl is fantastic! And this is coming from a patient who has not yet had surgery. In both my visits to Dr. Hartl, first , years ago, for lumbar herniations, and most recently for cervical stenosis and radiculopathy, Dr. Hartl was thorough, compassionate, spend a great deal of time with me, and most importantly, judicious and conservative in his clinical judgement, first recommending a visit to a neurologist for further study before recommending surgery, and previously, recommending continued conservative measures (ie: PT and meds), rather than surgery. Most impressive! I hope to avoid surgery, but realize that if at any time it should be necessary, I would be in the best of hands with Dr. Hartl.
