Board certification should be one of your top considerations when choosing a doctor. Board certification is an official recognition given to doctors who have met specific requirements set by national medical specialty boards in the United States.
Board certification indicates that a doctor is highly qualified in the medical field in which he or she practices. A board-certified doctor is more likely than a non-board-certified doctor to have the most current skills and knowledge about how to treat your medical condition.
I have not claimed a sub-sub speciality with a focus on evaluating and treating just certain diagnoses. Perhaps my many years of work within large Community Mental Health Clinics where necessity required an ability to meet whomever came through the front door has left me with an openness to address a full variety of issues. If there is a community resource that offers competent special care I am always open to make a referral.

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.

A new resident of Michigan in 2015, Dr Pinney formerly lived in Alexandria, VA and practiced at Fairfax and Arlington Mental Health Centers. At Georgetown University Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center he practiced and taught residents and fellows studying Child Psychiatry. He also had 8 months experience as a Consultant Child Psychiatrist in New Zealand near Wellington and Masterton. The move to the greater Flint area was to live near his extended family circle and to take up part-time farming at a new home on some acreage. A few years ago he took a 2 year sabaticle to explore the Caribbean on his sailboat.
Over the 29 years I have practiced almost exclusively Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, it could be said that I lean towards an "Education Model." This means providing information about the nature of mental illness, discussing evaluations and providing explainations about the method of action for various recommended treatments.
No medical proceedures are included in my practice. Vital signs and interviews followed by confidential therapy sessions with or without psychiatric medication is the basic format.
