Dr. Robert I. Fox received his undergraduate degree (B.S., Biophysics Summa Cum Laude) from the Honors College of the University of Michigan. He then completed the combined MD/PhD (Medical Scientist Training Program) at HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL and ALBERT EINSTEIN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE with PhD (Molecular Biology). He then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at STANFORD UNIVERSITY, followed by his Rheumatology fellowship also at Standford University. He joined the faculty of the Scripps Research Institute and Foundation 1980-1999. He moved to the Scripps-XiMED Medical Group on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in 1999 to present. Dr. Fox specialzes in the pathogenesis and teatment of Sjogren's Syndrome. He has edited many journals and pursued research interests through his role a Principal Investigator in multicenter clinical trials and through his own National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research programs. He serves as a member of numerous advisory boards such as the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the Advisory Board for the National Sjogren's Syndrome Foundation. Dr. Fox serves as Rheumatology Editor for MedScape and has written well over 100 additional articles and editorials for practicing physicians and patients that can be found on the Internet by a web search using "Medcape" or "WebMD" and "Robert Fox." Dr. Fox has been involved in studies of cevimeline for Sjogren's Syndrome for over 20 years, since the drug was originally recognized as a secretagogue in collaborative studies with the drug's original founder (Prof. A. Fisher) and the neurochemistry group at the Salk Institute. He wrote the clinical protocols for the pivotal trials leading to FDA approval, and is a consultant to numerous pharmaceutical research groups. He travels globally teaching and providing clinical expertise to the benefit of many physicians and patients, along with his wife who is a Registered Nurse, Administrator of his Rheumatology Clinic, and his medical editor.

Dr. Fox personally sees and treats all his patients each visit-- (he does not use Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners). Carla Fox, RN (his wife), oversees the Clinic as Administrator. Staff is highly trained, efficient, professional, friendly and responsive. Dr. Fox's "old school" philosophy, creative "out of the box" thinking, clnincal knowledge and judgment-- and support to navigate the medical access circuit-- work complimentarily to thoroughly and precisely evaluate, diagnose and manage patients and achieve optimal clinical outcomes. Many of his patients are referred by other medical world experts from leading global medical institutions. His patients typically present with highly complicated conditions, and he "gets it" --to his patients' poignant relief. He treats everyone as he would wish his family to be cared for-- with expertise dignity, compassion, understanding, and respect. He takes his time to LISTEN, and makes patients feel very personally cared for in a thoughtful and kind manner. He commonly coordinates care via direct email communicaton throughout the day and evenings, 7 days a week, to address medical concerns promptly. His average high complexity New Patient Consultation visit is ONE HOUR, and office follow-up revisits are a HALF-HOUR, so that the patient is not rushed. ***Dr. Fox is NOT an "in-network provider" for Medicare, Medi-Cal, ACA or private insurance carriers because he will not tolerate clinical decision-making interference and insurance reimbursement-based ploys. However, typically all labwork, tests, and imaging studies he orders ARE covered by insurance plans. He does tirelessly go the extra mile for his patients in a multitude of ways, including expediting ER admissions, paving the way for referrals to top medical institutions and specialists when necessary, and sensibly streamlining reduced cost prescriptons from local pharmacies --more reasons why he is so beloved and revered by his grateful patients.
